How to run this test

  1. Prepare the display

    Clean the surface, set the display to its native resolution, and temporarily disable Night Light, True Tone, blue-light filters, or dynamic contrast.

  2. Enter full screen

    Start the test and allow full-screen mode. Use the arrow keys, space bar, or on-screen controls to move between patterns.

  3. Inspect every color

    Scan slowly from corner to corner. A black mark on bright colors may be dead; a colored or white mark on dark colors may be stuck or bright.

  4. Confirm the finding

    Change patterns and viewing angle. If the mark moves with your head or disappears after cleaning, it may be reflection, dust, or a surface mark.

How to interpret what you see

Likely dead pixel

Stays black across several bright backgrounds. It may be a failed pixel or transistor and is usually not repairable with software.

Likely stuck subpixel

Stays red, green, blue, or bright while surrounding pixels change. It may be temporary, but there is no guaranteed fix.

Possible dust or surface mark

Looks soft, changes with reflections, or disappears when the screen is safely cleaned. Recheck before documenting a defect.

What to do if you find a suspected defect

Note the pattern that makes it easiest to see, count the affected points, photograph the display straight on, and record the model and serial number. If the device is within its return period, review the seller’s return terms before attempting any repair. For an older display, compare the manufacturer’s pixel policy with your result.

What does a dead pixel look like?

A dead pixel usually remains black on white, red, green, and blue backgrounds. A stuck subpixel usually remains a fixed bright color. Very small dust particles can look similar, so clean the surface and compare the mark across several patterns.

Can this test automatically detect one bad pixel?

The full-screen test helps your eyes detect individual defects. A browser cannot inspect the physical pixels from a screenshot of the same screen because screenshots capture the intended image, not panel failures. A separate camera photo can provide supporting evidence, but tiny defects may still require visual confirmation.

How many dead pixels are acceptable?

Warranty thresholds vary by manufacturer, model, defect type, location, and country. Do not rely on a universal number. Check the exact warranty or return policy for your display and document the location and appearance of each suspected defect.

Should I press or rub a stuck pixel?

No. Pressure can damage the panel layers and may make the problem worse. Use only manufacturer-approved panel-care features and avoid physical pressure.

Does the test work on phones and TVs?

Yes, if the device can open a modern web browser. On TVs, use the built-in browser or connect a computer and ensure the picture is not being cropped or overscanned.
