How to run this test

  1. Warm up and dim the room

    Use the display normally for about 15 minutes. Dim the room, keep brightness at a comfortable normal level, and avoid reflections.

  2. Begin with mid-gray

    Mid-gray often makes retained logos, taskbars, and uneven wear easier to see than pure black or white.

  3. Compare several colors

    Move through red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, and white. Persistent shadows across several patterns deserve a second check.

  4. Retest before concluding

    Return to varied content, use only manufacturer-recommended panel care if appropriate, then retest later to distinguish temporary retention from persistent wear.

How to interpret what you see

Faint fixed outline

A taskbar, logo, window edge, or game HUD that stays in the same location may indicate image retention or uneven OLED wear.

Vertical bands near black

Some low-level banding can be visible on OLED panels, especially at very dark gray. Judge it from your normal viewing distance and compare real content.

Color tint across part of the screen

Pink, green, or blue tint may be panel uniformity, viewing-angle behavior, or camera white balance. Check visually before relying on a photo.

A sensible retest sequence

Do not run aggressive “burn-in repair” videos for hours. First return to varied content. If your device offers a scheduled compensation or panel-care cycle, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Retest on the same ScreenVitals patterns under similar room lighting and brightness. A mark that disappears was likely temporary retention; a mark that remains may be permanent wear or another panel defect.

What is the difference between image retention and OLED burn-in?

Image retention is temporary and may fade after varied content or a manufacturer-approved panel-care cycle. Burn-in is permanent uneven wear that remains visible. A short browser test can reveal a persistent shadow, but only retesting after normal use or panel care can help distinguish temporary retention from permanent wear.

Which pattern is best for finding burn-in?

Mid-gray, red, green, cyan, and magenta often reveal different kinds of uneven wear. Near-black gray is useful for banding and low-level uniformity. Check more than one pattern because a faint shadow may be visible only on certain colors.

Can the test cause burn-in?

The diagnostic test uses static patterns only for short inspection periods. Exit when you finish and do not leave any static test pattern running unnecessarily. Normal short testing is very different from displaying static content for many hours.

No website can reverse permanent organic-pixel wear. Use only the panel-care or pixel-refresh feature provided by the manufacturer, and follow its instructions because frequent manual refresh cycles may add wear.
